Time for some O.O.O.!!!
1.  Watch this video!
2.  Now play this, either with another person at home or by yourself.
3.  Evaluate these expressions (solve) on loose leaf paper, remembering to write the problem exactly first, then a new line each time you solve part of the problem (PEMDAS).  Your final answer, in standard notation, should be on the bottom line.

1.       14 + 7 × 40 ÷ 8 - 7

2.       50 ÷ 5 + (7 × 2) × 9 + 4
3.       (11 - 5) × 2 + 7 + 36 - 9

4.      16 ÷ 8 + 27 - 35 ÷ 5

Visit this page for four more problems using exponents.  Please do 1-4 only (for homework).  Show work neatly in lines of PEMDAS completion.     FYI - the answers are on the second page, so after you show all of your lines of work, you can check immediately to see if you got the correct answers.

Some students have extra area and perimeter practice tonight.  The practice sheet is only for that group.  The Graphing Group has the following assignment:

Check out at least one of the sites listed below.  You are to find out how to find the area of any non-rectangle polygon.  Study how to find the area and write an explanation about it.  For full credit, include the name of the site you visited.  Be sure to write the explanation in your own words.  You only need to write about ONE type of non-rectangle polygon. Show one example of a shape, the measurements and it's area.   Be thoughtful, neat, and precise.

Tomorrow, we will go over the answers for 15, 27, 57, 93, and 75.

Oct. 11, 2013
We have been working on the rules of divisibility the last two days.  Practice using the study link sheet of rules and the problems on the page.   If you check back here on Monday, I will post the answers to the even problems.  Even though you have to do the whole sheet, you will at least see if you are following the rules well enough to identify all the divisors.  Make some flashcards for the rules if needed.  Know them on Tuesday.  We will do a learning check on these and move on to related facts in division.

Oct. 4, 2013
Our Unit 2 math test will be on Monday.  To prepare, I have some word problems here for you to work out.  Remember to follow the steps:
1.  Read all the words carefully.
2.  Restate the problem in your own words.
3.  Choose which numbers are needed to solve the problem.
4.  Explain what the numbers represent.
5.  Make a plan.  Decide which operation to use (or operations) before doing any work.
6.  Solve.
7.  Check your computation.  CHeck your thinking.  Does the answer fit with the question and the information.

Here are a few problems to work on:

Beth traveled 243.78 miles on the first day of her trip.  She traveled the exact same amount the next three days as well.  On the final day of her trip, she traveled 145.5 miles less than the other days.  She then rewarded herself by eating two pieces of cake which cost $1.79 per piece.  How far did she travel to eat her cake?
Jojo bought his three sisters, mom, and aunt each a flower.  The flowers cost $1.95.  How much would he spend?
Helga was checking out two different notebook computers.  One measured 8.75 inches and the other measured 11.5 inches.  What is the difference between the two notebooks?
Steven works at his job for 7.5 hours PER WEEK.  If he gets paid $7.75 per hour, how much will he get paid after two weeks (before all the taxes are taken out)?
Jimmy bought a bundle of a dozen red roses for his mom for $34.99 per dozen.  The store was having a sale on single yellow roses for $2.50 each.  Which roses should he buy for his mom if he is trying not to spend so much (not that mom isn't worth it!)?
Ming wants to compare two different laser measuring devices. The first measures a distance as 124.055 meters. The second measures the same distance as 125.3 meters. What is the difference in the measurements

September 25, 2013
Well, we took our quiz today on +/- whole numbers and decimals and I see that many of you still need to work on being thoughtful when checking your work.  Much practice will be needed in order to focus on precision.

While i will continue to work with some of you on the quiz concepts, as a whole class, we will on to multiplication of whole numbers and decimals.  Very important to spend time mastering whole numbers and multiple digits before moving to understanding decimals!

Here is a video to watch if you do not know how to multiply by a single digit.  Here is one for multiplying multiple digits.

ENJOY!

September 19, 2013
This one is for you S.P. from 4D.  Thanks for checking the blog!!

We have started our new Unit of study.  This one will go by quickly.  It will focus on the following concepts, so you can do extra work on these concepts at home as needed:
adding whole numbers and decimals
subtractingwhole numbers and decimals
multiplying whole numbers and decimals
dividing whole numbers and decimals
story problems using all of the operations, with multistep expectations
finding estimates using all the operations

Everything from Unit 1 will continue to be used, so putting the packet of work and the actual test from Unit 1 in a math folder somewhere would be a great idea!

SEPTEMBER 12, 2013
Hi everyone!  Thanks for checking in!  I wanted to share with you that we will most likely have our Unit 1 math test on Tuesday of next week.  Here are the concepts that I am checking on:
  • place value names from the billions place to the thousandths place
  • how to tell the value of any digit in a number.
  • writing numbers in standard form, expanded form, and written form
  • rounding whole numbers and decimals
  • comparing AND ordering whole numbers and decimals
  • multiplying numbers by multiples of ten (moving the decimal place to the right)
  • multiplying numbers by POWERS of ten (we'll go over this tomorrow in class - the problems from today's packet multiplying by decimals
  • focusing on word problems, reading problems carefully and completing multistep problem
See you tomorrow!!

September 4, 2013
This week, our class will be working on rounding number to the decimal as well as comparing and ordering numbers to the decimal.  Would you like some online practice so you are prepared in class?  Click HERE for a great lesson and some game links at the bottom.  Click HERE for another!
Have fun!

August 28, 2013

I told you there would be no online homework, but I just knew some of you would come here looking for something.  THERE IS NOTHING FOR TODAY!  Well... except this!  I mean, you did take the time to look here, right?  Draw a smiley face on the top of both sides of your homework.  Keep this to yourself!  You will be entered in a drawing for 10 Dolphin Dollars!  If you tell others, the chances of YOU winning the money is lower!  Good Luck!

AUGUST 27, 2013

Hi everyone!  I am writing here to help you in case you forgot the directions for today's study link page!  For the top section, you may use a calculator, remembering that each number can only be used once.  For the middle problems, you only have to SHOW your work for ONE problem...but i will give Dolphin Dollars if you show it for all of the problems in that section.  And in the last section, you are to choose where to show the work, but I asked you to show work on one of those division problems....but WHICH ONE???

Here are some fun practice sites for our current unit of study:

Good luck and see you tomorrow!!!

Have some fun with expressions and absolute value!  Try Millionaire games!  Choose one player, not two!   Then try a similar version with absolute value!

Here is a comprehensive site, but many of the links are not working.  There is still some good stuff here!!

3/13/13
Want some more fraction practice like you did in class today?  Check this site.

To find what we did today, scroll down the left column of concepts.  Click on fraction word problems 2 for today's problems.  You can also look at the other fraction word problems and any other concepts you want to work on.  The site is wonderful because it gives you practice problems, but then below, it shows you one way to solve the problem and gives the answer.  As we saw today, sometimes what we THOUGHT was the way to the answer is actually NOT.  ENJOY!

11/7/12
Visit THIS SITE to see the general schedule we will follow for Unit 3.  EDM journal pages are even attached, however they are blurry.  Some additional work will be added in our unit, but this is the general plan we will follow.  Please see that your child fully masters the concept we are CURRENTLY working on before moving on and introducing the next concept.  Moving ahead to the next concept is for kids who have mastered the concept we are currently focusing on and are ready to take a look at what is coming up.  Vocabulary is a big focus this unit too.

         Unit 3 vocabulary flashcards online
You can visit this site above for practice of vocabulary.  In fact, you can create your own account (with your parent's permission) to create your own list of flashcards.  You can manipulate (change) the card to show the term and definition, or just the term first and then click on the "click to flip" to see if you are stating the correct definition.

Also, you can change the way you practice by using the blue box choices below the term.  "Learn" is a fun way to practice, but the "Scatter" game is a little much with the amount of words in the definitions.  play around with it!

Here are two wonderful web resources to use if you have any questions about a concept we are studying in math.

khanacademy.org

studyjams.com

Click on the link, then search for the concept (like box plots, line graph, or absolute deviation).  Look for the video link to watch the concept lesson, or click any practice pages to practice the concept.  There is usually a "Watch how!" or "Help!" or "Show me!" on the practice page, so use the resources as needed.

Here is the powerpoint we used today in class showing how to find the Mean Absolute Deviation.
