Are you ready for Friday?

Hi there! If you answered "YES!" to the question in my post's title, that means you:

- have adequately studied the 13 original colonies and know how to place them on a
map (use links on the right hand margin!)

- have adequately studied the names of the original 13 colonies and can spell the names and capitalize them appropriately (use links on the right hand margin!)

- have read your fluency to a parent and have prepared to answer the questions on the back of the passage (or have a no homework pass to turn in for it)

- have created a survey for math class and have the catergories listed, ready for people to participate in your data collection (or, for Mr. Klein's class, have link 6.7 done)

- have had a tiring week and just want the weekend to begin!!!

See you tomorrow!

Information about spelling contract and....

Sorry I couldn't find the spelling tests before you left on Friday. I finally weeded through and found them and here are the results. The only 2 people off contract for Unit 18 are P.A. and K.Z. They got 100% on Unit 16 and Unit 17 alternate list tests. In a couple weeks, we will go back to taking a base list pretest to get on the alternate list for those of you who want the chance to be off contract. The people who got 100% on Unit 17 alternate list are as follows:
L.A.
P.A.
E.D.
A.P.
S.P
H.S.
D.S.
K.Z.
Those people listed above, if you get 100% on the test THIS week (unit 18), you will be off contract. Remember, you must get 100% on the alternate list 2 weeks in a row to be eligible for no contract work - it doesn't mean you don't need to study.

Contract work for Q2 will include 3 activities but now you need to complete 15 sentences from your assigned list. I will have this up on the homework board.

MORE:Math homework - my class needs to complete the graph for the Perfect Snack Mix. Also, work on using the geometry template creating different pie graphs. Be ready for an entrance slip on Monday where you will wow me with your knowledge!!

Wednesday for our field trip, I will allow for a morning snack before we leave for Robert Crown. It must be a healthy snack. We will be back for a late lunch in the classroom so you need to bring your lunch that day.

Test on Iditarod Dream will be on Tuesday.

Bring that report card envelope back signed by this Friday. Also, talk to your parents about your middle school options and bring that note back to me signed once you've made your decision!

Have a ggggreeeeeaaaat weekend! GO BEARS!!!

One post is ok!

So, this was not a stellar week for me with posting. I have been (and am) under the weather so I am not my usual self. However, here is what to expect the next few days:

Have your 5 paragraph essay about the ideal colony to live in (with detailed reasons) set and ready to type tomorrow. You will have 25 minutes to type it up and print it out tomorrow (this can be done at home and you can turn it in right away for free computer time! BONUS!)

Iditarod Dream - did you take adequate notes so you can complete the sequencing activity without your book tomorrow? Be able to sequence the events I give you in the order they happen. Test next Tuesday.

Math - my class has a 2 sided 5.10 link and Mr. Klein's class has 2 journal pages

Spelling - Unit 18 test and contract due next Wednesday.

Hill Principal, Darell Echols, came to visit the 5th graders today to talk about the options that they have for middle school. We talked at length about this in class after the meeting. This decision needs to be made now for the "track" you want to be on in middle school. IF you have questions, please email me. I will send an email out to my list serve about it as well.

We had a fun and educational assembly today with a puppet show about Native Americans. There is another show tonight at 6:30 - different story!

Early American colonists

Wow - we have done so much learning this week about the first English colonies in North America. Today, we talked about what our lives may be like had these brave people NOT been persistent and kept trying to build a new colony. We also talked about how these people shouldn't have thought they had the right to take land and resources from the native people who lived in these areas.

Today's final lesson was on the first 13 colonies in America. Look at the links on the right hand margin to visit some interesting sites on the first 13 colonies. Be able to name and identify all 13 colonies on a map, including correct spelling. This will be an extension of Chapter 5, and not included on the test on Wednesday. For our Chapter 5 test on Wednesday next week, study the vocabulary preview sheet we did at the beginning of the chapter (see words below). Also, know the main people from each lesson and why they were important to the success of the colonies. Have your Lesson 4 assignment (represent information in some way visually) ready to turn in on Tuesday.

My math class has box page 149 to finish (unless it was done in class). Also, spelling unit 17 contract work and test will be on Wednesday!

Have a great weekend and enjoy looking at some of the 13 colonies sites!

Chapter 5 vocabulary (including people and places):
charter, stock, cash crop, indentured servant, Northwest Passage, Pilgrim, Separatist, Puritan, John White, Squanto, Henry Hudson, Jamestown, Roanoke, beaver fur trading, New France, Samuel de Champlain, breadbasket, tobacco, William Penn

Also know the important dates, like 1585, 1590, 1620, 1630, 1608, etc.

You thought I forgot, didn't you??

Ha Ha! No I didn't forget!! Now, three days in a row! I am so proud of myself.

Please remember to bring in your field trip slip and money. I have heard the whisperings in the classroom about this trip and remember, I had a 5th grader last year so I know ALL about 5th graders!! Please, if you have any questions about this field trip, talk to your parent about them! If you have specific questions you would like me to give to the teachers in charge at the health center, just write them on a piece of paper and put them under the bell. Just write R.C. on the top and fold it and I will give them to the right person. No one needs to know the question you are embarrassed to ask is from you! It is very important that you understand that human beings grow and develop..that is nothing to be embarrassed by. You've been doing it for over ten years now!! I do understand that some of the things we will talk about can be a bit personal, but no one will direct questions to you specifically. You are there to listen and learn the facts about how humans develop. There. Done.

Here is our work due on Thursday.
Social Studies - DR-TA worksheet for lesson 3
Spelling sheet from this morning.
Math -my class, the pizza questions (percents, fractions, decimals)

I do not plan on posting tomorrow. I am exhausted after three days of posting!! (jk)
You will have spelling contract work (if you are on contract) and need to study for Chapter 5 Social Studies test next week on Wednesday. Also, there may be some math work from Thursday's lesson if you don't finish it in class.

See you in the morning. Hope you enjoy the little bit of snow we had this evening. I sure did.

Two in a row!!

Hey, I am on a roll!! Two days of posts in a row!!

Today was a unique day! 1/1/11!! We had a two minute party to celebrate!!

Here is what you wonderful people have to look forward to tomorrow!

We will have a spelling test - FINALLY!! After so many weeks without one!! Be sure to bring your work if you are on contract!

My class has a math quiz on Wednesday. Study guides should be signed and turned in. Also, you should finish page 147 and 148 in your journal if you didn't in class today. THis lesson was about changing from fractions to decimals to percents.

Continue to study Chapter 5 in social studies - we have read lesson one and two and tomorrow will read lesson three about the pilgrims. Tomorrow we will complete a DR-TA for this lesson. Do you remember what that is?

Tomorrow will be our final work day on your book review. You will have about 30 minutes to polish it up for grading! Publish date: Thursday

See you all tomorrow!!

Two posts in one day????

Now I hope to make up for the past couple of months by being better about posting. It is a goal of mine to post at least a couple of times a week. Let's see if I can keep up with it!

Today, we read lesson 1 from chapter 5 in social studies. We read about The Lost Colony of Roanoke and the first successful colony of Jamestown. Many students remembered learning about Jamestown in 3rd grade! It was a fascinating lesson, comparing the two attempts and evaluating why the colony of Jamestown "stuck it out" and made it work. The class is supposed to review the lesson (pages 156 - 161) and be prepared for an entrance slip covering the main ideas tomorrow.

My math class will have a quiz over chapter 5 Wednesday. A study guide came home today and only the odds need to be done for homework (due Wednesday). Mr. Klein's class will test tomorrow.

Take a look at the upcoming events to mark on your calendar which days the kids have off this month and next month.

:-)

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year to everyone!

We have easily transitioned back into the swing of things here in 5G! We are busy at work on our book reviews. One book was to be chosen to write a review about. It could have been a recent read or one that you finished over Winter Break. We are in the process of putting our ideas and opinions into a published pamphlet. We are learning a great deal about how to use the Publisher program!

As a reminder, field trip permission slips and money are due back soon for our trip to the Robert Crown Health Center. This is a trip we take to learn about human development. If you are curious about this programs, just click here to go to the Robert Crown site and click on Grade 5 and 6 program to read about the 5th grade program. Remember to open the lines of discussion with your child (or if you are the child reading this - talk to your parent!).

Spelling test this week is on Wednesday (and contract due).
My math class will have a quiz over Chapter 5 on Wednesday as well.
Last day for Accelerated Reader tests for this quarter will be Thursday!

:-)
