Moving Right Along....

Parents,
Today, the boys and girls had the follow up session regarding puberty.  They were separated as they learned more and talked about the changes that their bodies are going to go through.  Many questions may be coming home tonight about new things they learned, so please take time to ask what your child is feeling about what they are learning.  It is a great time to open the line of discussion that will continue for YEARS.  It's great to be a parent!

Today, we also were MAJORLY impressed with the 3rd grade musical.  WOW!! Mr. Pape did an amazing job preparing a wonderful program!  I can't wait to see what he and Mrs. Wagoner do with the fifth graders! The evening program is tonight at 7pm, so if you'd like an evening of entertainment, just come on over!

Many kids still need to turn in ther field trip permission slip to Metea on Monday for the author visit.  The report card envelope was due last Friday, so if you haven't signed that, please do and return it by Friday.  Finally, please talk with your child about their middle school choice, sign that note and get it back to me as soon as possible!

Kids had time to work on the following in class today and are responsible for the following tomorrow:

Snow Treasure - read up through chapter 15
packet questions for chapter 7-12 (20 questions - USE YOUR BOOK!!)
                           study those questions
flashcard words (all 13 from this week, as well as the 25 from last week)
Newsletter - should be read and signed
Math - Mrs. Kallal and Mrs. Ryan's class has homework.  My class does not - but there are some fun websites under the right margin (Advanced Math Sites - FDP -fractions, decimals, percents)

New Novels

Tomorrow will be the first Good Fortune Friday for the One Book/One School program!  I hope you are all taking part in keeping up with this reading so you can participate with the activities.  Remember that it is a voluntary program, but you can use the reading you do with your family to meet your goal pages each night!  I hope you are enjoying it!

Tomorrow, we will begin our novel study for Snow Treasure.  This is a novel based on what was happening in Norway during the early part of World War II.  Today, we covered some background information about this war (some people, places, and reasons for the war).  WHile today's lesson was based around a great deal of HISTORY, you will soon see that there this novel has a lot to offer.  There is adventure, mystery, and LOTS OF SNOW!!!!

Homework:
Math
My class has a packet of study links - only evens are assigned, but you may do any odd problems if you need extra practice on a concept.  We have a quiz tomorrow and our part 1 test of the unit will be next Friday.  I hope you remembered to bring your notebook home so you can compare fractions using the different ways I showed you.  You can always search online for "how to compare fractions."

The other two classes have homework as well.

Social Studies
Test over chapter 7 tomorrow.  You may use your notes, but as we learned today, our notes are only helpful if we are thoughtful when writing them.  IF you write too much, you won't find what you are looking for.  If you write too little, you may not have the resource to find the answer.  Either way, what is most important is that you read the chapter and review it well (the end of chapter review would be a good thing to help you).  Also, remember your crossword is due tomorrow.

Word study - Study those 7 vocabulary words that you created flashcards for.  Look under language links for the link to the Quizlet site!

As a reminder - there is NO SCHOOL on Monday, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.!!

Middle School Excitement!

5G News

Middle School Options:
We started off our day today with a visit from staff members from Granger.  They went over the options for middle school and a packet was sent home as well.  Please take time to talk to your child about the options and send the blue note (only) back to school by Jan. 31.  You should choose one option and sign the top of the note.

Robert Crown:
Our trip to Robert Crown is next week, so if you have not sent in money or the permission slip, please do so tomorrow.

Bingo Night:
The PTA Bingo Night is this Friday!  Try to bring the family if you can, it's a really fun event!!

One Book/One School:
Upon further consideration, the 5th grade team has decided to focus on other reading material for classwork and leave the new book selection, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, as the family focused program it was intended to be.  This is such a wonderful story and I encourage all families to take time to participate!

Genre Projects:
January books for the genre projects should be finishing soon and project work beginning.  Presentations should be between 2-4 minutes.  The projects are due on January 30, so any day when the homework is on the lighter side (not tonight), take advantage and work on it.  I am always available for 5-10 minutes before lunch and 5-10 minutes before dismissal for any questions about anything!   I have reentered the biography project and it looks like it is linked correctly this time.

Homework for tonight:

Reading - continue to log pages you are reading.  We will conference this week about increasing pages.  The One Book/One School book counts toward your total pages for the day, so be sure to include those pages!  Finish up your January book if you haven't already and start working on your project.  I am going to allow a few people who are already done with their projects to begin presenting when we have a few minutes of extra time.

Math - Mrs. Grezlik's class and Mrs. Kallal's class has a sheet of homework (time given in class and many finished)

Social Studies - finish up two column notes for both lesson 1 (work from last week) and lesson 2 (read in class last Friday) for chapter 7.  Our activity in class tomorrow will require the use of these notes, not the book.

Word Work - definitions were already turned in, time was given for the syllable sort last week, so that and two other activities are due for tomorrow.  Test tomorrow.  After this list, we will take a couple weeks off from our word sort work to focus on the vocabulary for our CLASS NOVEL STUDY.  We will focus on applying knowledge about prefixes, suffixes, and spelling patterns.  This will be challenging, but very rewarding!

Writing - Time was given in class today to begin the newsletter for this week.  There is a half sheet with directions to follow.  Many kids finished this in class so they just need to get it read and signed by a parent!

Welcome Back!!

Dear Class,
What a great day we had!  I am so impressed with the level of attention and motivation I saw today (and I WASN'T looking in the mirror!).  We had a busy day, but ended it with our earned (and gifted) Choice Time, which many of you used to do homework.  Again, I was impressed by that level of motivation!  Must be some great presents at home to promote using Choice Time so home time can be spent in OTHER ways!  I was very happy to see all of you this morning (except one, I.K) as I have missed your bright, smiling faces!

Here is our homework for this week:

Reading:  Continue to log pages (we will meet this week and next to conference about increasing pages).  Some of you need to be thoughtful about finishing your genre project book with enough time to complete the project work which is due on Jan. 30. For most projects, you can even start the project before you are done reading (especially historical fiction).  The only project that is changing is the biography and autobiography project, which I will post later tonight.

Reading:  We are working on summarizing this week, but some of you will need to finish the definitions for the story we will read tomorrow.

Writing:  We will only have 30 minutes to complete our newsletters tomorrow in lab, so BE PREPARED with your three topics and details so you can crank it out!  I saw some GREAT work being done in writing today!

Math:  Everyone has a sheet of homework.  My math class has a quiz on Friday over the following:
  • divisibility rules
  • prime factorization
  • LCM
  • GCF
If need be, take a look at Khanacademy or studyjams.com for some extra help.

Social Studies:  3 sentence summary for the brief passage you had to read on the history of schools.

I know this seems like a lot, but remember that I gave a good deal of time to work on the reading and social studies assignments in class (outside of Choice Time), with the exception of math.  One goal to make for the new year is to use time wisely and be focused during instruction (that goes for ME too!).
