RJ Palacio Trip

The whole 5th grade went to Metea Valley High School this morning to listen to the author RJ Palacio talk about her career and her book, Wonder.  We all learned so much and enjoyed the time we had with her, learning about where the idea for this "wonder"ful book came from.  We spent time today after the trip talking about how WE can respond, with KINDNESS, to people who are different from us in any way.  We created and acted out quick skits about possible situations we may be in where we may be faced with someone who looks or acts different.  It is helpful to talk about exactly what you might say in one of these situations so that you aren't so overwhelmed by fear that you forget to be kind.  The kids did  a great job and we had a great discussion.

We are in the second half of our Snow Treasure novel and are to carefully read chapter 18 (it's only 3 pages) and complete the DR-TA sheet.  This is a Directed Reading - Thinking Activity that helps direct students' thinking as they move through text.  Much like the annotations we have been working on, this activity reminds us to visualize, reread, read ahead, make predictions, and make sense of what we have read.  We also have flashcards to study for our weekly quiz.  Tomorrow, we will work through a few more chapters and will finish the book this week.

If you would like to see some interesting annotations RJ Palacio made of her own writing in Wonder, check out her website for Wonder HERE.  These are thoughts she made as she read back over her own work.  As we have been working on in writing, there is great value in going back through your writing to make sure you've gotten your point across in an understandable way!

Homework for today:
Read chapter 18 in Snow Treasure
Complete the DR-TA
Finish and study flashcards

My math class has math boxes and a sheet of practice due on Thursday, even though we will have math tomorrow.
